The Netherlands visa from Pakistan
Netherlands
The short answer. The Netherlands is a Schengen country, so the visa is the standard short stay type C and the document list is the Schengen one. The single most common mistake on a Dutch application is applying because the flight changes at Schiphol. That is not what decides the consulate. What every Schengen file needs
More Pakistani travellers pass through the Netherlands than visit it, and that one fact causes most of the trouble on these applications.
Schiphol is an airport, not a destination
Amsterdam Schiphol is one of the two or three airports a European itinerary from Pakistan is most likely to change at. People then assume the Netherlands is where the visa comes from. It is not.
The consulate is decided by where you will spend the most nights on the ground. A connection, even a long one, even an overnight one inside the airport, counts for nothing at all. Two nights in Amsterdam and six in Berlin is a German application.
There is a separate thing called airport transit, which applies to a handful of nationalities who need permission merely to change planes. A Pakistani passport holder with a valid Schengen visa is not in that position for a normal connection, but if your itinerary involves leaving the airside area between flights, tell us, because that is a different question and the answer depends on the route.
When it genuinely is the Netherlands
Business and trade. Rotterdam is Europe's port and a great deal of what Pakistan exports arrives through it. Traders, freight agents and food exporters make up a good share of the genuine Dutch files from this office. That file wants the Dutch company's invitation, something showing the business relationship, and your own company's registration and tax papers. The consulate is asking why this trip, and a shipping history answers it better than anything you can write.
Family. The same shape as any Schengen family visit: the host's residence document, their income, their housing, and a formal invitation. The Dutch system has its own name and its own form for this, and your relative there will know it.
The tulips. A real season and a short one, roughly late March to mid May, and a real reason people go. It is also a season when every hotel within reach of the bulb fields is full, which matters because an accommodation booking is part of the file.
What to allow, from Karachi
Six to eight weeks is the normal answer. For tulip season, three months, because the hotels go before the appointments do and the file needs the booking.
Q: My flight connects at Amsterdam. Do I apply to the Netherlands?
No. Apply to the country where you will sleep the most nights. A connection is not a visit, however long it is, as long as you stay inside the airport. If your plan is to leave Schiphol and spend a day in the city between flights, tell us, because now the Netherlands is somewhere you are actually going and the itinerary needs to show it.
Q: Is the Netherlands an easier Schengen country to apply to?
No. It is the same visa under the same rules, and the idea that some consulates are softer than others is a rumour that costs people the fee. What varies is how long an appointment takes to get, not how the decision is made.
Q: I am going for a trade meeting. What else does my file need?
The invitation from the Dutch company on their letterhead, naming you and the dates. Something showing the relationship, which for a trader is usually prior invoices or shipping documents. Your own company's registration, bank statements and tax papers. And a letter from your company saying who is paying and confirming you are expected back at work.
Q: Can I see Belgium and Germany on the same visa?
Yes. Once issued, the visa works across the whole Schengen Area. Just be sure the country you apply to is the one with the most nights, not the one in the middle of the map.
Before you pay anything
Requirements change, and the form a Dutch invitation has to take is something your host should confirm from the Dutch government's own information rather than from any website, including this one. We check the current position before every submission.
Send us the passports, the dates, and what the trip is for. We will tell you what the file needs before you spend a rupee on it.
