The Malta visa from Pakistan
Malta
The short answer. Malta is a Schengen country, so the visa is the standard short stay type C and the document list is the Schengen one. What makes Malta different is that English is an official language, which changes who goes and why, and brings a kind of file the other Schengen countries rarely send us. What every Schengen file needs
Malta is the smallest country in the Schengen Area and the one Pakistani travellers know least, which is a pity, because it is also the one where the language is not a barrier.
English is the reason most people end up here
Malta was under British rule until 1964 and English remained an official language alongside Maltese. Signs, menus, hospitals, offices and courses are all in English.
For a Pakistani traveller that removes the one friction that makes a first European trip tiring. It is also why Malta has a real industry in English language schools, and why a share of the Malta files this office handles are not holidays at all.
The short course file
A short course is still a visitor visa, as long as it is short. That file needs the standard Schengen documents plus:
- The school's enrolment letter, naming you, the course and the exact
dates.
- Proof the course is paid for, or the payment plan if it is in
instalments.
- Accommodation for the whole stay, which the school often arranges and
which should be in writing either way.
- Your own reason to come home. A course is a reason to go. The consulate
still wants the answer to what brings you back, and for a young applicant
with no job yet that usually means the family's position rather than their
own.
A word of honesty here. A course long enough to be a study programme is not a visitor visa at all; it is a national visa, a different application with a different process. We will tell you plainly which side of that line your course falls on rather than filing the easy one and hoping.
The holiday
Small, hot, and more interesting than its size suggests: Valletta, the walled towns, Gozo across the channel, and the diving. Three or four days covers it, which is why Malta is usually part of a longer trip rather than the whole of one.
That matters for the consulate question. A trip of three nights in Malta and eight in Italy is an Italian application. Malta is the consulate only when Malta has the most nights, which for a pure Malta and Gozo trip it does.
Malta is also a cruise stop. If that is how you are arriving, the visa question follows the ports rather than the ship, and the sailings this office books are on the cruises page.
What to allow
Six to eight weeks for a holiday. For a course, start as soon as the school confirms your place, because the enrolment letter is the document the whole file is built on and there is no point starting without it.
Summer is hot and crowded; spring and autumn are the better trips and the easier appointments.
Q: Is Malta an easier Schengen country to get a visa for?
No. Same visa, same rules, same ninety euro fee. Malta is a small country with a small consular operation, which affects how quickly appointments come round rather than how the decision is made. Picking a consulate because it is thought to be lenient is how people end up applying to a country they are barely visiting, and that is a refusal on its own.
Q: I want to do a four week English course. Which visa is that?
A four week course is normally still a short stay visitor visa, with the school's enrolment letter in the file. Longer than that and it starts to become a national visa, which is a different application entirely. Send us the course dates and the school's letter and we will tell you which one it is before you pay for anything.
Q: Can I work on this visa while I study?
No. A Schengen short stay visa does not permit work of any kind, and taking a job on one puts your future visas at risk for years. If work is part of the plan, that is a different route and a different conversation, and we would rather have it honestly now than see a refusal later.
Q: Is Malta worth a trip on its own?
For three or four days, yes, especially if it is a first trip to Europe and the language matters to you. For two weeks, most people pair it with Sicily or southern Italy. Tell us how long you have and we will say honestly whether Malta should be the whole trip or part of one, and which consulate that makes it.
Before you pay anything
Requirements change, and the line between a visitor visa and a study visa is one that moves. We confirm the current position before every submission rather than trusting any list, including this one.
Send us the passports and the dates, and the school's letter if there is one. We will tell you what your file needs before you spend a rupee on it.
