The Italy visa from Pakistan
Italy
The short answer. Italy is a Schengen country, so the visa is the standard short stay type C and the document list is the Schengen one. Most Italian applications from this office are family visits, and in a family visit file it is the host's papers in Italy that carry the case, not yours in Karachi. What every Schengen file needs
Italy is unusual among the Schengen countries for Pakistan, and the reason is simple arithmetic. There has been a Pakistani community in northern Italy for a long time, around Brescia and Bergamo and across Lombardy, which means most of the people who walk in asking about an Italian visa are not going to see the Colosseum. They are going to see a brother.
That changes what the file is.
A family visit file is mostly somebody else's paperwork
A tourist proves he can pay for himself and will come back. A family visitor proves that a real person in Italy has really invited him and can really support him. The weight moves abroad.
What the host in Italy has to produce:
- An invitation, formal rather than a WhatsApp message. In Italy this is
often a declaration the host signs in front of the comune, and your relative
will know the form by name even if you do not.
- Proof that they are legally there. A residence permit or an Italian
passport, with the dates clear.
- Proof of what they earn, usually payslips and the annual tax return.
- Proof of where you will sleep, which for a family visit is their own
housing papers rather than a hotel booking.
What you still have to produce: your own passport and photographs, your own travel insurance, your flight booking, and enough of your own position in Pakistan that the consulate can see what you are coming back to. A file that says only "my brother will handle everything" leaves the second question unanswered, and the second question is the one that refuses people.
Tourists, and where Italy sits on a European itinerary
Italy is also the country most likely to appear in the middle of somebody's first European trip. Rome and Venice for four nights, then Paris for six.
That is a French application, not an Italian one, because the rule is nights on the ground and France has more of them. If the nights are genuinely equal, it becomes the country you enter first. Get this wrong and the consulate can refuse the file on that alone, without reading the rest of it.
Bring the whole itinerary before anything is booked. Which consulate the trip belongs to is usually obvious once the nights are written down, and almost never obvious before.
Summer is the problem, not the paperwork
Italy in July and August is where half of Europe already is, and the appointment calendar reflects it. The document list does not get harder in summer; getting a slot does.
Two to three months ahead for June, July and August. Six to eight weeks for the rest of the year. If the trip is tied to a family event with a fixed date, tell us the date first and we will work backwards from it.
Q: My brother in Italy is sponsoring me. Do I still need my own bank statements?
Yes. His statements answer who is paying. Yours answer what you are coming home to, which is a different question and the one that decides more refusals. An account with some history in it, a job, a business, property, a family that depends on you: any of these help. Put both sets in and explain in the covering letter which is which.
Q: Is an Italian visa easier to get than a German or French one?
No, and anybody telling you otherwise is selling something. It is the same Schengen visa under the same rules. What differs between consulates is how busy they are and how long an appointment takes, not how generous they are. Choosing a consulate on a rumour about its mood is how people end up applying to the wrong country and losing the fee.
Q: I want to see Rome and Paris. Which one do I apply to?
Count the nights. More nights in Italy, apply to Italy. More in France, apply to France. Equal, apply to whichever you land in first. Bring us the itinerary and we will tell you which, and we would rather do that before you book than after.
Q: Can I visit for a wedding on a short notice?
Possibly, but the honest answer is that a fixed date and a short runway is the hardest combination in this office. The earliest the rules allow an application is six months before travel and the latest is fifteen days, but fifteen days assumes an appointment exists, which in summer it often does not. Come to us the day the date is set, not the week before.
Before you pay anything
Requirements and the way invitations have to be made change, and the Italian process for a family invitation in particular is something your relative should confirm at their own comune. We check the current position before every submission rather than trusting any list, including this one.
Send us the passports and tell us who you are going to see. We will tell you what your file needs, and what your relative needs to send from their end, before you spend a rupee.
