The US visitor visa from Pakistan
United States
The short answer. The United States visitor visa, B1 for business and B2 for tourism, is the one on this list decided by an interview. You file the DS-160 form online, pay the fee, book an appointment, and answer questions in person. The documents matter, but the officer decides on the conversation, and the conversation is usually under three minutes.
The American visa is different from every other visa in this office, and the difference is not paperwork. It is that a person looks at you and asks.
The process, in order
- The DS-160. A long online form. Every answer is on the record and the
officer has it in front of them. Mistakes on it are not administrative; a
contradiction between the form and what you say at the window is the
single most damaging thing that can happen in the interview.
- The fee, paid before the appointment, not refundable, not transferable
to another person.
- The appointment, usually two visits: one for fingerprints and
photograph, one for the interview itself.
- The interview, at the consulate. Minutes, not hours.
- The decision, usually given to you there and then.
The interview is the application
This is the part worth understanding, because the whole of the American system rests on it.
American law begins from the position that every visitor visa applicant intends to immigrate, and asks the applicant to show otherwise. That is section 214(b), and it is why a refusal under it is not an accusation of anything. It means the officer was not shown enough to set that presumption aside.
What sets it aside is a life in Pakistan that plainly continues after the trip: a job you are going back to, a business that needs you, a family that depends on you, property, studies. The officer is not auditing your bank balance. They are forming a view of whether you are coming back.
Practical things that matter more than people expect:
- Answer the question asked, briefly and truthfully. Long answers invite
more questions.
- Know your own form. If the DS-160 says you are a shopkeeper in Saddar,
be a shopkeeper in Saddar at the window.
- Bring the documents but do not expect to be asked for them. Many
interviews end without a single paper being looked at. That is normal and
is not a bad sign.
- If somebody in America is paying or inviting you, say so immediately.
Discovered later it looks like concealment; said at the start it is simply a
fact.
A 214(b) refusal is not a ban
It is a finding on the day, on what was shown. You may apply again. What you should not do is apply again the next week with the same form, the same answers and nothing new, because nothing has changed for the officer to decide differently.
What changes a case: a new job, a promotion, a marriage, a business that has grown, property, a travel history built elsewhere. A Pakistani passport with used and returned-from UK, Schengen or Canadian visas in it is a materially stronger application than the same passport empty, and for many families the honest advice is to build that history first.
What this office does and does not do
We prepare the DS-160 with you so that it is accurate and consistent, assemble the supporting documents, book the appointments, and sit with you beforehand on what will be asked and how to answer it.
What nobody can do is attend the interview for you or influence its outcome. Any agent who suggests otherwise is describing something that does not exist, and you should walk away from that conversation.
Can you guarantee a US visa?
No, and nobody can. The decision belongs to a consular officer in a private interview and no agent, anywhere, has a route around that. What we are responsible for is that your form is accurate, your documents are in order, your appointment is booked properly and you know what is coming. That is the part within anyone's control.
I was refused under 214(b). How long before I can reapply?
There is no fixed waiting period. You may apply the next day. The question is not when but whether anything has changed, because the officer will be deciding the same question on the same evidence otherwise. Come and talk to us about what has changed before paying the fee a second time.
Does having a UK or Schengen visa help?
It is not a qualification and it does not entitle you to anything. It is evidence, and good evidence: somebody who has been given a visa by another serious country and came home on time has a record that speaks for them. This is why, for a first-time applicant with no travel history at all, we sometimes suggest a different trip first.
My whole family is applying. Do we all get interviewed?
Generally each applicant has their own form and their own appointment, though families are often seen together and young children usually are not interviewed. The arrangements vary and they change, so we confirm them for your particular party rather than assuming.
Before you pay anything
American fees, appointment arrangements and interview-waiver rules change, and they have changed several times in recent years. We confirm the current position before every application rather than trusting any list, including this one.
Come and see us before you file the DS-160, not after. The form is the part that is hardest to repair once it has been submitted.
