The Sri Lanka visa from Pakistan
Sri Lanka
The short answer. Sri Lanka runs an electronic travel authorisation, applied for online before you fly rather than through a mission with an appointment. It is among the quickest permissions on this page, which makes Sri Lanka the easiest country here to go to at short notice. Confirm the current terms before booking: Sri Lanka has changed both its fees and its eligibility more than once.
Sri Lanka is two and a half hours from Karachi and almost nobody goes, which is a strange fact about a country with tea estates, elephants and a coastline. The tours page carries Kandy and Bentota with its price.
The short lead time is the whole advantage
Most of the countries on this page need six to eight weeks because of an appointment calendar. Sri Lanka does not work that way. The authorisation is applied for online and decided without an interview or a biometric visit, which makes it the realistic answer when somebody has ten days of leave starting next month.
What it still needs:
- The passport, with the validity required on the day.
- Confirmed return flights. Onward travel is checked.
- Where you are staying.
- Enough to support yourself, which for Sri Lanka is a modest number by
regional standards.
The island has two monsoons, on opposite sides
This is the thing that decides whether the trip works, and it is not intuitive.
The south and west, which is Colombo, Bentota and Galle, is at its best roughly December to March. The east coast runs the other way, best around May to September. The hill country, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya, is cool all year and is where the tea is.
So there is no bad month for Sri Lanka. There is a wrong coast for the month, and a trip booked without that in mind is a beach holiday in the rain while the other side of a small island is in sunshine.
What a family trip actually looks like
Four days is the common package and covers Kandy and a stretch of coast. A week does the island properly: the cultural triangle, the hill railway, a safari for elephants, then the sea.
The train from Kandy up into the hills is the thing people remember, and it is worth building the itinerary around rather than fitting in.
Is it really this easy compared to the others?
For the permission, yes, and it is the main reason to consider Sri Lanka when a European or Far Eastern trip has run out of runway. For the holiday it is not a lesser trip, which is what surprises people.
Is halal food available?
In Colombo and the main tourist areas, readily. Sri Lanka has a long-settled Muslim community and it is not a country where the question causes confusion. Outside the cities it takes arranging, and we arrange it.
Is it suitable for elderly parents?
Yes, with the right itinerary. The hill railway and the coast are gentle; the cultural triangle involves climbing, and Sigiriya in particular is a serious flight of steps in the heat. Tell us about mobility and we will build the trip around what is comfortable rather than leaving somebody at the bottom.
Can I go next month?
More realistically than anywhere else on this page. Send us the dates and the passports and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable, including whether the flights make sense at that notice.
Before you pay anything
Sri Lanka has changed both the fee and the eligibility terms of its travel authorisation more than once. We confirm the current position before every application rather than trusting any list, including this one.
Send us the passports and the month. We will confirm the route and tell you which coast that month belongs on.
