The Kenya visa from Pakistan
Kenya
The short answer. Kenya moved from visas to an electronic travel authorisation applied for online before departure. Confirm the current terms for your passport before booking, because the system is recent and has been revised. The thing that catches Pakistani travellers out is not the permission at all: it is the yellow fever certificate.
Kenya is the safari, and it is on the tours page with its price. It is also the only trip on this list where a health document can stop you at the airport with a valid permission in your hand.
The yellow fever certificate
Kenya is in the yellow fever belt and vaccination requirements apply both to entering and, more importantly for a Pakistani traveller, to coming back and to any country you transit through afterwards.
Two things about it that matter:
- It takes time to become valid. A yellow fever certificate is not valid
immediately; there is a waiting period after the vaccination before it
counts. Having it done the week before you fly is having it done too late.
- It is checked. This is not a formality that gets waved through.
Get this started before you book, not after. It is the single most common reason a Kenyan trip has to be moved, and it is entirely avoidable with four weeks of notice.
The permission itself
Applied for online before travel. What it wants is the ordinary shape:
- The passport with the validity required.
- Confirmed return flights.
- Where you are staying, which on a safari means the lodge bookings.
- Evidence you can support yourself.
A safari itinerary is usually booked as a package, which makes the accommodation part straightforward: one document naming every lodge and every night.
When the migration actually happens
The great wildebeest crossing is what people are picturing, and it does not run to a calendar anyone can promise. Broadly it is in the Masai Mara around July to October, with the river crossings concentrated in that window, but it moves with the rain every year and no honest operator will guarantee you a crossing on a given day.
What we will tell you is which weeks give you the best chance, and that the Mara in the off months is still full of animals. Anybody promising you a crossing on a named date is promising you something they do not control.
What a safari trip actually involves
Early mornings, long drives on rough tracks, and a lot of sitting still. It is magnificent and it is not restful.
For elderly parents it can work very well, because the vehicle does the walking, but the roads are hard and the days start before dawn. For young children it depends entirely on the child. Tell us who is coming and we will be honest about whether the itinerary suits them, including suggesting a shorter one.
Do I still need a visa for Kenya?
The system changed from a visa to an electronic travel authorisation, which is applied for online. It is recent enough that the terms have been revised, so we confirm the current position for your passport before anything is booked rather than quoting a rule that may have moved.
Is the yellow fever vaccination really compulsory?
Treat it as compulsory and arrange it early. Requirements depend on your route and on where you travel afterwards, and the certificate has a waiting period before it is valid. This is the part of a Kenyan trip that goes wrong, and it goes wrong at the airport.
Is halal food available?
In Nairobi and on the coast, readily; Kenya has a long-established Muslim community, particularly around Mombasa. On safari it depends on the lodge, and it is something we arrange with the operator in advance rather than leaving to the first evening.
Five days. Is that enough for a safari?
It is the common package and it works for the Mara. It is not enough for the Mara plus Amboseli plus the coast, and an itinerary selling you all three in five days is selling you a lot of driving.
Before you pay anything
Kenyan entry arrangements and health requirements change, and the travel authorisation system is recent. We confirm the current position for your passport and your route before anything is booked rather than trusting any list, including this one.
Send us the passports and the month. We will confirm the route, tell you when to start the vaccination, and be honest about what the migration will and will not do.
