Hajj preparation checklist for Pakistani pilgrims
The short answer. In order: check the passport expiry, decide government or private, start the vaccination that has a waiting period, fix the documents so every name matches, choose and verify the organiser, get the package in writing, start walking, then deal with money, clothes and the household. The order matters more than the list, because two of these have waiting times attached and everything else can be done quickly.

Most checklists are a pile of items. This one is sequenced, because the things that cost people their departure are the two with a clock on them: a passport renewal and a vaccination with a waiting period. Everything else can be done in a week.
As soon as you decide
1. Check the passport expiry. Today, before anything else. A renewal in a hurry is the most common reason a file stalls.
2. Decide the scheme. Government or private. Nothing else can be planned until this is settled, and the two have different applications, prices and accommodation. The comparison is in government or private Hajj from Pakistan.
3. Start the vaccinations. One of them has a waiting period before you may travel. Begin now, not later. This single item causes more lost departures than any other.
4. Make the documents agree. Passport, CNIC and NADRA records must carry the same spelling of the same name. A name written two ways in two places will stop a file and is tedious to unpick.
Choosing who takes you
5. Verify the organiser before any money. The Hajj Group Organiser licence and the HOAP membership number, checked rather than taken. Ten minutes, and the steps are in how to verify a Hajj travel agency.
6. Ask the real questions. The Mina camp category, the hotel by name and its distance, how many pilgrims are under one group leader, what is excluded, and the cancellation terms. The full list is in what to ask a Hajj agency before booking.
7. Tell them about your family. Ages, mobility, heart conditions, a knee that will not take stairs. Before the package is chosen, not after. It changes which Mina category and which hotel are right, and those cannot be changed later.
8. Get it in writing and keep it. The package, the hotels, the dates, the excluded list, the payment schedule, the cancellation terms. Pay the registered company, against a receipt, never a personal account.
The months before
9. Start walking. This is the preparation people skip and the one returning pilgrims always mention. Hajj is days of walking, in heat, often at night. Walk, regularly, in the shoes you will actually wear. Months, not weeks.
10. See your doctor, especially for an older pilgrim or anybody with a long term condition. Ask for enough medicine for the whole journey plus a margin, and for the generic names written down.
11. Learn the rites properly. From your scholar, not from a travel agency. We will not teach them and you should be wary of an agency that offers to.
12. Sort the money. Decide how much to carry and how much to change at home. Airport rates are the worst of the journey. Budget for the things no package includes: gifts, which are nearly always the largest unplanned spend, and taxis taken when somebody is too tired to walk.
The month before
13. Buy the unscented things in Pakistan. Soap, toothpaste, shampoo, wet wipes. A fraction of what they cost beside the Haram.
14. Break in the shoes. New shoes and Hajj are a bad combination.
15. Pack from the list, then take things out. The full list is in what to pack for Hajj from Pakistan.
16. Prepare the paper. Copies of the passport kept separately from the original, the hotel name and address in Arabic, and a small card in every pocket with the group leader's number and the office number in Pakistan.
The week before
17. Settle what you leave behind. Bills, the business, who holds a key, who has your documents. Peace of mind on the journey is made here.
18. Confirm the flight and the meeting point with the group leader, and the time you are expected, not just the time the aircraft leaves.
19. Weigh the bags at home. Somebody repacks on the airport floor every year.
20. Make your arrangements with people. Debts settled, forgiveness asked. Every pilgrim who has been will tell you this is the part they were most glad they did, and it is the one item on this list that has nothing to do with us.
The day
Travel light, arrive early, and expect the first day to be long. Many flights land in the small hours; decide in advance whether you are going straight to the Haram or sleeping first. Deciding is what saves the next day.
If you want this done with you
Send us your dates and who is travelling, and we will go through this list with you, including the parts where the honest answer is that something should have started earlier. Our departures, with the Mina category, hotels by name and the Munazzim's details, are on the Hajj packages page.
